This is it-Arcadia Melzo, sala Energia in digital 2K

This is a movie that deserve to be seen on a very large screen, with a very good sound and possibly in all-digital mode.


So we went to the Cathedral again, on a rainy saturday night yesterday.

Well, much - probably all - has been written about this movie already, so I'll focus on only two points..

Image and Audio Perfection.

This is an all-digital production, something rare to see. Most "digital" film are really shoot on film, and then scanned into 2k digital master. But this was filmed in digital, with the incredible "RedOne" camera. Ar at least part of it were (some images were "HD" - and it was easy to see the difference, expecially in the depth of colors, and some in SD television - frames were smaller in these cases).

Having the possibility to see it at Arcadia, with a Christie Digital 2K projector, with 7 channels of audio, in a THX equipped theatre is really something.

The image was superb, and this photo  I've taken

 cannot really show it. But perhaps having a look at the screen dimensions may help:


But the big part was audio. the dynamic range, the clear sound was really something. It has to be noted that in digital cinema there is no audio compression, no "mp3" or whatever: it is pure digital, uncompressed sound.

So this presentation with a movie that can drive one to tears resulted in applause after every song, in people crying "I love you", and ended in love, love for him, for his music and for our world.

Which is what MJ was telling us. 

So I think he succeeded. Thank you Mike.

Our media system

And this is the other point.

The media, the worldwide media, has told us for years about a different MJ, one who slept with children, addicted to drugs, one who wasted all his money, totally isolated from the rest of the world and so on.

But looking at this film we can clearly see it was not so.

I'm of course sure  the children were sent to his house by "parents" who wanted to be able to sue him and steal some of his money,  

But all the other stories?

I already knew this for Italian press (or media system in general), but now I think it is clear for the worldwide media system: We cannot trust the press, we cannot trust the media, we're better switch it all off.

And go discover the truth on our own, on the web or directly, personally, when this is possible.

We exited the theatre with tears on our faces. Yes, this was it.

Shot on Red - Il futuro della "fotografia"

Cercando informazioni su come e' stato ripreso il film di Jackson, "This is it" - ovvero con l'incredibile camera digitale RedOne - ho trovato questa interessante notizia:

La copertina di giugno della rivista "Esquire" riporta un servizio su  Megan Fox, "Fotografata" da Greg Williams.

La cosa interessante e' questa: tutto il servizio fotografico e' stato realizzato non con una reflex, ma bensi con la cinepresa digitale RedOne (la stessa dello splendido film sulla vita del Che ("Che a revolutionary life"). Al di la degli aspetti tecnici (non e' una telecamera, e' una vera cinepresa full frame su cui si montano ottiche Zeiss), la cosa interessante e' "il processo" realizzativo delle foto, illustrato qui dal fotografo.


In pratica, anziche' obbligare la modella a stare ferma cambiando "discretamente" posizioni innaturali, si e' scelto di lasciarla muovere liberamente, utilizzando poi come fotografie singoli frame del servizio.

Riporto qui quanto dice il fotografo dell'esperienza della modella, che mi pare rilevante:

It allowed her to act," Williams says. "She could run scenes without being reminded by the sound of a shutter every four seconds that I was taking a picture. As in still photography, a lot of it is capturing unexpected moments. This takes that one step further.

Zona DTT All Digital - Osservazioni

Ho fatto una scansione dei canali televisivi nella prima zona "all digital" in cui mi capita di poterlo fare, ad Arco in trentino. Alcune osservazioni

1) Rai4 non e' affatto in 16:9. Ma non era una delle sue caratteristiche alla partenza ?

2) Pochissimi programmi sono in 16:9, e comunque mai la pubblicità. 
In contrasto, ad esempio, la settimana scorsa a Nizza (francia) ho notato che e' tutto in DTT, tutto e sempre in 16:9 (e a volte in HD), e che le pubblicità sono a loro volta in 16:9

3) Radio sul DTT praticamente non ce ne sono: solo Radio 1-2-3, "FD Auditorium" (il glorioso V canale della filodiffisione, ritrasmesso in via sperimentale anche in radiostereofonia su 102.2 a milano da 1969 mi pare), ed una sola radio privata.
Non e' strano che nessuna radio sperimenti questo modo di essere diffusa, neppure Radio101 su un mux mediaset ?

Finally... in alta definizione c''e solo... "La 7 HD" (la sette ???)--che pero' non ho potuto vedere casa mancanza della possibilità di acquistare decoder Mpeg 4 (e qui mi fa ridere pensare che chi compra - notare che qui e' obbligato -  per il DTT ne dovrà a breve comprare un altro per vedere sul plasma che si comprerà a natale i programmi in HD.

Assente Rete4hd o come si chiama, assente RaiTest HD (o come si chiama--ma la trasmettono solo a torino??), presenti invece canale5+1, italia1+1, rete4+1, di cui tutti sentivano una mancanza lacerante (infatti ho notato la popolazione in giro per strada piu' sorridente del consueto).

Coucher de soleil, nice oct 2009

Well, I was there for work..but i could not resist having a short walk on the promenade at sunset tonight.


And here is what I saw...

there are two interesting things ...first, the light went UP (i mean, in became brigher) at some point, as can be seen by confronting "tramonto 1" with  "tramonto 3" (the latter shot later then the former).
and - as can be seen by zooming on tramonto 1, many windows, far away, reflected the entire sun back to us!

Super8Film Festival!

- Guardi che da anni esistono le videocamere!

Excuse-me, do you have a super8 film cartridge?
Hey---it's long gone, now we have video cameras, you know?

This is probably what happens (or would happen) if we walk into a shop and ask for some film.

Nothing, they THINK there's only video now (and not even anymore on cassettes...but on SDcards only).

Well--not so. 

Kodak is still producing film, real film, and a growing number of enthusiast use it to create films, real films, not youtube-smartphone clips.

A real film is something that cost in term of time (to concieve, invent, plan, shoot, develop, mount, project) and money (a lot of money for the film itself and for development).

But what you get is a real film, incredible kodachrome (or ektachrome to be fair) colors, and something that cannot be expressed by words other that "the film look".

Which is why CSI Miami, for an example, is shot on film and not on HD video.

Well in Milano every year super8 enthusiast get together for this festival, wichis a mix of market for used equipment, conferences and projections of actual films (movies).

New Camera, New Banner, all is Nice!

The banner I used to use got too old: it was shot in a fitness center no longer operating ("esprit"), it featured the screen of a computer I no longer own (powerbook g4), a radio tuner no longer operating (Teac FM tuner) and my agenda open on a page of the then-about-to-be-created "Bip Como" Apple Store.


Indeed the only thing still actual was the image of Anto, who is still here with me after so many changes.

So, after finding this incredible, working super8 camera in Cagnes-sur-Mer "alta" (haut de Cagnes)

Blog Action Day - Global Warming.

Much, very much has been said about global warming.


So this time I think it is relevant to remember what Michael Griffin, former NASA admin (a guy with seven degrees, and  about to get another) said

(Si parla molto di global warming, per cui e' il caso di ricordare cosa disse l'ex amministratore della Nasa, Michael Griffin, un tale con sette lauree e l'ottava in arrivo...):

"I have no doubt that global -- that a trend of global warming exists. I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with. To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of Earth's climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn't change.
First of all, I don't think it's within the power of human beings to assure that the climate does not change, as millions of years of history have shown, and second of all, I guess I would ask which human beings - where and when - are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that's a rather arrogant position for people to take."[15]
